The Knudsen number (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knudsen_number) is a dimensionless parameter, defined as ratio of the molecular mean free path length to a representative physical length scale.

The physical length scale in case of microstructures typically is the average pore size. Depending on the Knudsen number, three cases are distinguished.
