GeoDict User Guide 2025

Add Random Surface Cover

The Add Random Surface Cover app covers parts of the surface of a chosen material ID of the currently loaded geometry. The surface-cover percentage, that is set as aim, is found by a Newton-Raphson iteration scheme.

Note-Important

Modules needed to run this GeoApp:

MatDict, GrainGeo

Click Edit to open the Add Random Surface Cover parameter dialog.

Select a Result File Name fitting to the current project.

The random surface is created using GeoDict's Gaussian Random Field Generator. Control the Typical Size of Surface Patches, which changes the standard deviation of the Gaussian field. Additionally, define the Thickness of the Cover.

Set the Approximate Percentage of the Cover, which controls the surface coverage percentage. The algorithm tries to iterate until the correct surface coverage percentage is reached. The Maximum Error for Cover Percentage is a stopping criterion for this iteration. If the surface coverage percentage is within this error bound, the computation will be considered finished. Another stopping criterion is the Max. Number of Iterations for Calculation. If the number of iterations exceeds this parameter, the computation will be considered finished.

Then define all materials involved in the computation. The Material ID to Cover defines the material ID that should be covered. The added surface cover will have the set Material ID of Surface Cover. The Material ID to Reassign is the material that the algorithm uses as space for the surface coverage. This is typically the pore space ID 00.

The Random Seed for the Gaussian Random Field Generator can affect how the surface cover looks like and how it is positioned.

After defining all parameters click OK to close the dialog, go back to the GeoApp section, and click Run.

Results

After the Add Random Surface Cover app finishes the result file is loaded in the Result Viewer. In the result file the reached surface coverage is stated. Below you see the exemplary result for creating a surface cover on a cathode structure. Here, the target for the surface coverage percentage was 45%.

The resulting covered structure is loaded in the visualization area. This structure as well as the result of the Gaussian Random Field is saved to the result folder.
