GeoDict User Guide 2025

Pack Analytic Spheres

When choosing Pack Analytic Spheres from the pull-down menu in the GrainGeo section, densely packed spheres are generated. GeoDict uses a force-biased algorithm to create the dense packing (see Ohser, 2009).

The necessary parameters can be entered in the GrainGeo - Pack Options dialog, after clicking the OptionsEdit… button. When the desired parameters have been entered in the Pack Analytic Spheres dialog, clicking OK closes the dialog and returns to the GrainGeo section. There, clicking Generate starts the process.

A Result File Name (*.gdr) should be entered to differentiate the results of every run of previous computations. The GDR (GeoDict result) files contain complete information on packing parameters, achieved packing density, and packing process file names.

The available units (m, mm and µm) are selectable from the pull-down menu at the top right.

The parameters are organized into two tabs:

  • Pack Options
Enter the general properties of the packed structure.
  • Sphere Distribution
Determine the parameters for the sphere size probability distribution.
  • Results
Statistics about the sphere pack or piling are given in the Result Viewer. Also the packing or piling process can be visualized in 3D.
