GeoDict User Guide 2025

Install GeoDict on Linux

The necessary files to install GeoDict on your computer can be downloaded from GeoDict’s web site.

For Linux, the installer of GeoDict is available for download in three alternative formats, as deb package, rpm package or gzipped tar archive:

  • GeoDict2025-1-1-Linux-x86_64-Release.deb
  • GeoDict2025-1-1-Linux-x86_64-Release.rpm
  • GeoDict2025-1-1-Linux-x86_64-Release.tar.gz

Additionally to the GeoDict package, we recommend to install the GeoDict Tools package. This package contains open source tools which are licensed under the GNU Public License (GPL). In Linux, it consists of x264, a free software library and application for encoding video streams into the H.264 or MPEG-4 AVC compression format. Without installing the GeoDict Tools package, you cannot export movies from GeoDict in these formats. The GeoDict Tools package is also available as deb package, rpm package or gzipped tar archive.

  • GeoDict2025-1-1-Linux-x86_64-Release-Tools.deb
  • GeoDict2025-1-1-Linux-x86_64-Release-Tools.rpm
  • GeoDict2025-1-1-Linux-x86_64-Release-Tools.tar.gz

It is important to install the GeoDict package first, then (optionally) the GeoDict Tools package.

Note-Info

Note! The name of the files will be different for later released Service Packs, the numbers after GeoDict2025 show the minor revisions. The installation of versions named 'Service Pack' works identical to the 'Release' version and does not require a prior installation of the 'Release' version.

The web page also offers gray value data set examples for download. The file GeoDict2025-GrayValueDataSets.zip contains them in a zipped format. Simply select a folder of your choice to store the data sets and unzip the downloaded file there - there is no special installation process required for this file.
