GeoDict User Guide 2025

Install GeoDict on Microsoft Windows

The necessary files to install GeoDict on your computer can be downloaded from GeoDict’s web site.

The GeoDict installer is an executable file that will open the installation wizard:

  • GeoDict2025-1-1-Windows-Release-Setup.exe

Additionally to the GeoDict package, we recommend to install the GeoDict Tools package. This package contains open source tools which are licensed under the GNU Public License (GPL). The tools package contains:

  • The MinGW compiler needed to compile UMATs in ElastoDict on Windows.
  • x264 and mp4box, free software libraries and applications for encoding video streams into the H.264 or MPEG-4 AVC compression format.
  • Notepad++, a text file editor for Windows.

The GeoDict installer offers the option to download and install the GeoDict-Tools package. We recommend to select this option. In this case, it is sufficient to run the GeoDict installer, and you do not need to install the Geodict-Tools separately afterwards.

It is important to install the GeoDict package first, then (optionally) the GeoDict Tools package.

Note-Info

Note! The name of the files will be different for later released Service Packs, the numbers after GeoDict2025 show the minor revisions. The installation of versions named 'Service Pack' works identical to the 'Release' version and does not require a prior installation of the 'Release' version.

The web page also offers gray value data set examples for download. The file GeoDict2025-GrayValueDataSets.zip contains them in a zipped format. Simply select a folder of your choice to store the data sets and unzip the downloaded file there - there is no special installation process required for this file.
