Results
After the Estimate Surface Area calculation is finished, the resulting files are saved in the project folder and a Result Viewer with the GeoDict result file opens automatically. The created GeoDict result file (*.gdr) contains four tabs. The computational results are shown under the Results tab. The other three tabs (Input Map, Log Map, and Metadata) display additional information about the computation.
Find more details on the general functionalities in the Result Viewer user guide.
As mentioned in Estimate Surface Area, GeoDict uses two algorithms to estimate the surface area.
Algorithm 1 computes the surface area by adding up the voxel surfaces. Thus, the Number of voxel surfaces is only given for this algorithm.
Algorithm 2 estimates the real surface area, originating from statistical image analysis, where the determination of the four Minkowski measures (Volume, Surface Area, Integral of mean curvature, Integral of total curvature, see also J.Ohser, F. Mücklich) from voxelized images is an essential task. This algorithm uses a staggered grid, which means it uses the voxel centers of the original grid as corners. In this grid, half a voxel cell is left over on each side. When using Periodic boundary conditions, those half-cells are completed across the domain boundary again to full grid cells, and this way the whole volume is taken into account. Without periodic boundary conditions, these half-cells are discarded. This means, that without periodic boundary conditions half a voxel is cut away on every side, so a slightly smaller volume is considered when computing the specific surface area.
For both algorithms the Surface area, and the Specific surface area, defined as the Surface Area normalized by the total volume of the structure, are stated in the result file.
In the example below, the surface area between solid and pore was calculated with non-periodic boundaries.
